Downtown Binghamton Building May Have to Come Down

Ellis Brothers Furniture is one of the last historic and iconic businesses in downtown Binghamton. It has stood since the doors opened in 1900. Can you imagine a business being open for one hundred and fourteen years? 

Today, this important piece of Binghamton was devastated by fire. According to our sister station, WNBF, the fire started on the ground floor and went straight up to the 4th. The structure is brick and solid on the outside, so the extensive damage was done to the inside.

Sadly, Ellis Brothers may have to be torn down due to the damage the structure received. It is heartbreaking for the family and heartbreaking for the City of Binghamton.

Every day when I come into work, there it is, the words "Ellis Brothers" on the top floor of the building. It was a comforting reminder that we cherish our past. It will be an empty feeling I get the first day I look up and there are no words to look at.

I hope that if this icon must come down, that the family will rebuild and remain where they belong: right in the heart of Binghamton. After all, they are part of this City's heart.
