Doug’s Sports Rap: New York’s NFL Trilogy Part Two Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills have certainly had their share of highs and lows through the years, from hall of fame players, to AFC championship teams, including 4 trips to the Super Bowl, and the BIG low… they lost all of them.
Founded in 1960 by Ralph Wilson who owned the team until his death earlier this year, the Buffalo Bills who were an American Football League team, they actually won two AFL championships in 1964 and 65 before entering the NFL in 1970.
The Bills are the only team to win four consecutive conference championships, and are the only NFL team to play in four consecutive Super Bowl games, all of which they lost.
Since the merger in 1970, the Bills have made the post season 13 times, they currently hold the record for the longest drought, they have not made the playoffs since 1999 and are the only team so far to yet to appear in the playoffs in the 21st century.
The best version of this team was the 1990-1994 roster which include QB Jim Kelly, WR Andre Reid, RB Thurman Thomas, DE Bruce Smith, they also had another Hall of Fame Running Back by the name of OJ Simpson, unfortunately that name is seen in a negative light today, Simpson was the first professional football player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season, he did it in 1973 when the NFL played only 14 games in a season...Six others have done it since, but in a 16 game season.
Last month the late Ralph Wilson's estate reached an agreement to sell the team to Kim and Terry Pegula, which is currently pending league approval. It looks like the deal should go through, and I am excited for Bills fans, it’s almost certain that the team will stay in Buffalo.
The Buffalo Bills are off to a rough start at 1 and 3, it was just announced that they will bench their starting QB EJ Manuel, and start back up QB Kyle Orton on Sunday against the Detroit Lions.
The Buffalo Bills are the only NFL team that plays in New York State, and as a Giants fan that stings a little, but its true and noteworthy.
Many people would love to see the Buffalo Bills bring home a Lombardy Trophy; some of the best fans in the world are Bills fans.
Best wishes to all the fans.
