Originally recorded in 1967 by Marvin Gaye, and rejected by Motown's Berry Gordy, the song was also recorded by Gladys Knight and the Pips and released in 1968.
Marvin Gaye's version came out later that year on his album, and quickly gained attention from radio stations around the country.

Many artists have covered the song including Creedence Clearwater Revival, who recorded an eleven minute version in 1970.
