Originally recorded by The Animals in 1965, the song gained awareness in the height of the Vietnam War. It is number 233 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs.

The song was written by hall of fame songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Many rock bands have covered the song, but in the mid 70's, Blue Oyster Cult started performing it in their live shows.
