Martha and The Vandellas released the original hit in 1964 and it has gone on to be performed and recorded by many artists throughout the years, including, The Grateful Dead, Black Oak Arkansas, Van Halen.

In 1985, David Bowie and Mick Jagger were going to perform it via satellite from two different locations as part of a Live Aid Charity event, but neither wanted to mime their  performance so they didn't perform it.
