Tom Petty’s ‘You Got Lucky’ Covered by Divine Fits
Tom Petty fans watching late-night television got lucky Wednesday night (March 27), when indie darlings Divine Fits performed the Heartbreakers classic ‘You Got Lucky’ on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ in a hip version that was surprisingly faithful to the original.
‘You Got Lucky’ was the first single from 1982′s ‘Long After Dark’ album, peaking at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Billboard Top Tracks chart near the end of the year. The track’s now-iconic arrangement was a bit of a musical anomaly for Petty, and that’s actually what makes it so ripe for a retro-cool cover version.
Divine Fits’ rendition retained the New Wave keyboard underpinning and the overall quirky feel of the track. They brought the key down a bit for Dan Boeckner as he delivered a vocal that was a bit more direct than Petty’s spaced-out nasally drawl on the original, but still retained the vibe that made the track special to begin with — complete with the oddball, vibey guitar solo, though without some of the reverb that made it so ultra-cool. Their performance ended with an energetic guitar jam that provided an interesting twist.
Divine Fits released their first album, ‘A Thing Called Divine Fits,’ to widespread critical acclaim last summer. They’re a bit of an indie supergroup; Britt Daniel is the frontman for Spoon, while Boeckner is best known for his participation in Handsome Furs and Wolf Parade. Though they have no shortage of their own material, the group have a demonstrated penchant for classic rock covers; in February they covered the Bruce Springsteen classic ‘Hungry Heart‘ on the Australian TV series ‘Like a Version.’
