David Sweat Reportedly Talking to Investigators

Former Broome County resident David Sweat is said to be speaking with police after his capture following his escape from a maximum-security state prison.

Sweat was shot by a state trooper near the Canadian border Sunday afternoon, more than three weeks after he and Richard Matt broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.

Sweat is being treated for his injuries at Albany Medical Center. Dr. Dennis McKenna, the hospital medical director, said as of Monday morning, Sweat's condition had been upgraded from critical to serious.

CNN reported that Sweat is talking to investigators. According to a source cited by the network, Sweat indicated he and Matt expected prison employee Joyce Mitchell would pick them up when they escaped on June 6.

When Mitchell didn't show up, the escapees had to improvise. The source indicated Sweat told authorities he and Matt had been together until five days ago.

The source said Sweat decided to set out on his own because he believed Matt was slowing him down.

Matt was shot and killed on Friday near Malone.

Police have said Sweat was unarmed when he was spotted by state police Sgt. Jay Cook in the town of Constable.

Officials said Cook shot Sweat twice in the torso when the escapee started running across a field.

Albany Medical Center officials expect Sweat will remain at the hospital for "at least a few days" while his condition stabilizes.
