David Bowie’s Ex-Wife Does Not Like His New Single

Upon its release, David Bowie‘s new single,’Where Are We Now,’ received glowing reviews. However, Bowie’s ex-wife is less than impressed, and has taken to the U.K. media to voice her displeasure.

On Sunday (Feb. 10), Angie Bowie penned an article for the Daily Mail in which she criticized the song for looking backwards, a concept that is antithetical to her former husband’s seminal works. “I can’t help but wonder what happened to the musical innovator,” she wrote. “I’m not trying to be unkind, but I can’t escape the feeling that the retro-introspective mood of the song has one message – ‘I’m not going to be here much longer, let’s talk about the past.’”

Most of all, she takes offense to the idea of Bowie looking back on his famous Berlin years with anything resembling fondness. “What I remember of Berlin – where David lived for three years in the late Seventies,” she continued. “Is lots of sitting around nightclubs, with David pretending he was an extra from ‘Cabaret’ witnessing the rise of the Nazis…My father had fought in the Second World War and David knew that I would have no truck with fascism.”

‘Where Are We Now’ is David Bowie’s first single since 2003. Angie Bowie knows all about a decade of silence. As part of their divorce settlement in 1980, she was prohibited from speaking about their relationship for ten years. A month after its expiration, she told Joan Rivers and Howard Stern on national television that she once caught her husband in bed with Mick Jagger.

“I think they were composing ‘Angie,’” she said at the time, referring to the Rolling Stones classic.
