Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards for their 1968 album Beggars Banquet, it is number 32 on Rolling Stones 500 greatest songs list.

The song points out the terrible things done to mankind throughout the years and is sung in a kind of first persons view.

The song was covered by Guns N' Roses in 1994 and appeared in the movie 'Interview with the Vampire' and on their greatest hits album where it reached number 55 on the top 100.

The song ultimately caused the departure of  lead guitarist Slash and rhythm guitarist Gilby Clarke.
