The Who's album 'Tommy' was  an amazing concept. It was released in May of 1969 as a rock opera.

I can't tell you how many times I watched the movie version

The album was pretty much the work of Pete Townsend and sold over 20 million copies. It was made into a movie, a Broadway musical, was performed at the Metropolitan Opera House, and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. I can't tell you how many times I watched the movie version which came out in 1975, featuring the members of The Who, Ann-Margaret, Oliver Reed, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Jack Nicholson and Tina Turner. A great movie and soundtrack!

The Tommy soundtrack reached number two on the US albums charts, and number 21 in the UK in 1975. It was on this day - April 22nd, 1969, The Who performed 'Tommy' in it's entirety for the first time in Dolton, England. For this week's Classic Rock Pick, check out an awesome clip of 'Overture' with Pete Townsend jamming on the guitar, plus a clip from the Tommy movie with Roger Daltry singing 'I'm Free.'
