Every year when we begin Classic Rock from A to Z, I get asked "When will Iron Butterfly's 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' air. Of course I have to be a smart-ass and reply with "When we get to the letter I."

The drum solo takes up a lot of the tune, and that's what I love the most.

Sometimes the joke works, and sometimes it doesn't. It's hard to tell when a song will air on Classic Rock from A to Z, since we load each song one at a time into the computer when it's time to play. The Iron Butterfly tune is, of course, a classic. So much so, that even an episode of The Simpsons did their own version of the song, albeit a shortened version titled 'In The Garden of Eden.' That title was the what we've always heard as the true song title.

The words are short and only at the beginning and the end of the song. The drum solo takes up a lot of the tune, and that's what I love the most. I was a drummer in school and anything that features a great drum solo is just fine with me.

Now for some bad news, and some good news. 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' already aired on Classic Rock from A to Z, but I found a video from 1968 of Iron Butterfly performing this gem for you to get your psychedelic fix. The video quality is not the best, but the song is there in all it's glory. Enjoy.
