The song was written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster, first performed by Roger Miller, the song was about a woman Named Bobby.

Janis Joplin  loved the song, but changed the character in the song to a man and recorded it on her 1971 album 'Pearl', sadly Janis never knew the huge success of her version of the song, as she died before it was released.
