‘CBGB’ Trailer Goes for the Laughs

“50,000 bands and one disgusting bathroom.”

CBGB,’ director Randall Miller’s long-in-the-works look at the legendary New York club that played host to a long list of influential bands between 1973 and 2006, is just a few months from its theatrical debut. As proof, here’s the first trailer for the film, starring Malin Akerman as Deborah Harry of Blondie and Alan Rickman as club owner Hilly Kristal.

The trailer, which positions the movie as a wacky comedy with a killer soundtrack, balances the club’s behind-the-scenes story (with Rickman spouting dialogue like “These kids have something to say — we really should listen”) against performance clips of bewigged actors impersonating signature CBGB acts like Blondie, Talking Heads, the Ramones and Iggy Pop (who’s played by the Foo Fighters‘ Taylor Hawkins).

It’s hard to argue with the music, but early reactions to everything else about the trailer have been decidedly mixed, with Dangerous Minds calling it a “big steaming pile” and the top YouTube comment on the trailer deeming it a “turd.” It’s got to be disappointing for Miller, but hey, responses like that are sort of punk, right?

Whatever your feelings about the trailer, we’ll know more about ‘CBGB’ when it arrives in theaters on Oct. 11, along with a soundtrack heavy on classic tracks by the bands featured in the movie.
