The Broome County Sheriff's Office now is prepared to accept unwanted needles and syringes in a collection box.

Although the office in the town of Dickinson has had a disposal box for old medications, people were unable to dispose of so-called sharps at the site.

Sheriff David Harder said his agency has worked with the county health department to place a deposit box at the office where people can bring needles and syringes.

The sheriff's office off Upper Front Street is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Harder said people now may drop off prescription drugs that are no longer needed or sharps in the appropriate box at the office.

Other medication drop boxes are located at the Broome County Office Building and at the county public library in downtown Binghamton.

The county has collected between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds of unwanted drugs a year since the program was launched.

Harder said the old medications that are dropped off are transported twice a year to Oswego where they are incinerated.
