Broome County is down in the rankings and it’s not complaining about it.  Broome County has gone from the highest crime rate of any county in New York State to 6th with a crime rate drop of 16% in 2016.

District Attorney Steven Cornwell says, however, the number of violent crimes crawled up 2% in 2016. But Cornwell says that rate is already down about 18% this year.

Much of the crime noted in 2015, placing Broome at the top of the list of all the counties in the state involved thefts, robberies and larcenies, with many of those incidents linked to fueling the County’s growing drug addiction problem.

The crime index notes reports of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and vehicle theft.
