Binghamton Police Sgt. Steve Ward, Speaking on the December 13 edition of the weekly local public affairs program: Southern Tier Close Up, says the Broome County Toys for Tots program has already started handing out gifts to local families.

Sgt. Ward discusses how the program operates, where the toys come from and how families can enroll their children.

Ward also talks about the differences between the local Toys for Tots and the program operated by the Marine Corps League and how the Broome County Toys for Tots was allowed to use the Toys for Tots name.

The local operations are headquartered at the University Plaza thanks to the generous donation of the space and utilities by developer Marc Newman.

While that donations saves the operation a lot of money, Toys for Tots still has thousands of dollars in overhead costs in addition to buying some toys for the children.

More information on how to donate can be found on face book at broome county toys for tots and their website www.broometoysfortots.com as well as several locations with donation barrels.

Southern Tier Close Up can be heard Sundays at 6am on 99.1 The Whale.
