UPDATE: Broome County Sheriff Deputy Injured in 2-Vehicle Crash on Route 17

The investigation is underway into a two-vehicle crash on Route 17 on the Endicott/Vestal River Bridge that drew response from several police agencies early February 1 and sent a Broome County Sheriff's Deputy to the hospital

Broome County Sheriff David Harder says at around 1:40 a.m., a vehicle traveling the wrong way on State Route 17 in the area of the River Bridge between Endicott and Vestal hit a marked Sheriff's Office car driven by 32-year-old Deputy Kristy Botsford.

Deputy Botsford was driving west with her emergency overhead lights activated assisting marked patrols from the Vestal Police in an attempt to stop a reported wrong-way driver and found the suspect vehicle stopped on the highway east of exit 68.

Authorities say as they approached the vehicle,the driver, Daniel Butash, accelerated away at a high rate of speed, still going the wrong way and drove, head-on into Deputy Botsford's patrol vehicle.

Deputy Botsford suffered serious injury and was pinned inside the 2014 Ford Explorer until emergency services personnel were able to able to free her using the "Jaws of Life."

The Deputy suffered several injuries including a broken leg and is being treated at Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center.

Butash was taken to Wilson hospital with minor facial injuries and scrapes and authorities say he showed signs of intoxication. Charges are pending.

The Vestal Police are currently conducting a driving while intoxicated investigation.
