Broome County is to get $400,000 dollars from New York State to treat jail inmates addicted to heroin and opioids.

Tioga County is also to receive $156,000 for jail treatment programs in a $3.75 million allocation approved in Albany.

New York State Senator Fred Akshar of Binghamton, who co-chairs the Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction says jail-based addiction services are key in fighting the drug epidemic with numerous studies showing inmates getting help in jail are less likely to re-offend.

In addition to the Broome County Jail, facilities with an Average Daily Population of more than 250 getting $400,000 in funding are Erie, Niagara and Schenectady Counties.  The Jails with an ADP of more than 250 getting $200,000 are in Albany, Suffolk, Nassau, Monroe and Oneida Counties while jails with an ADP of less than 250 getting $156,000 in funding are in Tioga, Tompkins, Clinton, Columbia, Jefferson, Ontario and Putnam Counties.  Wayne County will get $58,000 in funding.
