The Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz. has a new Hospitality and Music Room thanks to Poison‘s Bret Michaels. The room was officially opened this week (Oct. 9) with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Michaels, for whom the room is named, donated the room as a thank you to the hospital for saving his life following a brain hemorrhage in 2010. The singer and reality show star returned to St. Joseph’s a year later to close a hole in his heart, a condition that had been in place since his birth.

The purpose of the room, Michaels said, is “so people can come in here when they really need a break. It just gives them something to take their mind off what’s going on … Music is such a healing process, regardless of what you like or what you listen to. It gets you up when you’re feeling down.”

The room features inspirational quotes and photos of Michaels, including his May 17, 2010 cover of People magazine bearing the quote, “I’m lucky to be alive.” A separate room for children has positive messages written by Michaels’ daughter’s second-grade class.

Michaels has become quite the healthcare-related philanthropist in recent years. His victory on NBC’s ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ earned $640,000 for the American Diabetes Association, and has also raised money for Parkinson’s disease, brain tumor research and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis.
