There will be no carousel rides in the city of Binghamton for the unofficial start of summer.

The historic Recreation Park carousel on the West Side broke down three days before it was to open for the season.

The merry-go-round at the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park will be closed for a second season as plans are finalized for a restoration project.

The Rec Park carousel, which was installed in 1925, was to have opened for the season on Saturday.

But according to the Parks and Recreation Department, it needs repairs and is out of service.

A statement issued by the department said "getting replacement parts made" is a "top priority." The statement indicated several carousel manufacturers and machine shops have been contacted.

Mayor Richard David had planned to join elementary school students Thursday for what was billed as the "season's first official ride" on the Rec Park carousel. But City Hall Wednesday evening announced the scheduled event had been cancelled.
