The City of Binghamton has a new way to get suspects to the Broome County Jail while insuring the safety of prisoners and police.

A new prisoner transport van was put into service September 1 that not only features padded seating and seat belts but video recording systems and an emergency escape hatch.

Mayor Richard David says incidents in other areas have demonstrated that municipalities that don’t upgrade prisoner transport risk the safety of both officers and prisoners.

The new transport van cost $64,580.

The old transport van was bought in 2003.
