A farm site in downtown Binghamton is busy as teenagers tend to crops and participate in some educational activities.

This summer's program operated by VINES - Volunteers Improving Neighborhood Environments - has 20 participants. They range in age from 14 to 19.

The urban farm is located on Tudor Street, just south of Susquehanna Street.

Several of the teens involved in this year's program have participated in the past.

They tend to the fruits and vegetables being grown at the downtown site. They also help to manage the CHOW farm located in the town of Conklin.

On one recent afternoon, the participants were working in groups to make solar ovens. Each group developed a specific type of oven that was to be used to as a slow cooker to prepare a meal of vegetables and rice.

The urban farm produced about 7,000 pounds of food for sale and donation last year.
