Global technology solutions firm, Johnson Controls will be switching Binghamton's street lights to LED bulbs.

The $4 million project should be complete by early 2016.

There are 7,000 street lights being converted to LED.

Binghamton Mayor Richard David says people will immediately notice the difference and the City atmosphere will be more inviting.

The Syracuse-based Johnson Controls beat out five other companies bidding for the project.

The company will also be looking at possible LED technology for the parking garages and bridges.

The City says switching to the more energy efficient bulbs is expected to save the city enough to offset the cost of the project.

In 2013, the City spent about $1.47 million on energy expenses.  Of that, $534,751 was spent on street lights.
