The federal government is asking Southern Tier commuters questions about how they travel from place to place.

Residents in the Binghamton area have been receiving questionnaires from the United States Department of Transportation in the mail.

The agency tosses two dollar bills in each envelope as a "small token of appreciation" to encourage people to participate in the National Household Travel Survey.

According to the New York State Department of Transportation, the survey will consist of several rounds of mailings to randomly selected households. The program will be conducted over the next year.

The initial mail survey includes more than a dozen questions. After the form has been returned, participants will receive a log to provide details about how they travel on an assigned day.

Participants also will get a phone call to answer a series of questions about their travel habits.

The survey results will be used to help determine funding for future transportation projects in New York and other states.

According to the survey mailing: "No matter how much or how little you travel, your experiences are important."
