Becky Sutliff has been promoted to captain in the Binghamton Police Department, becoming the highest-ranking woman officer in the history of the agency.

Sutliff joined the department in 1993. She rose to the rank of sergeant in 2000 and to lieutenant in 2013.

Mayor Richard David announced the appointment Tuesday (March 8).

In a statement released by City Hall, Sutliff said she hopes to use her supervisory position "to help make our community safer and advance many public safety initiatives."
