The city of Binghamton will continue to charge a $3 per-item fee for collection of bulk trash for another four months but the fee could then be dropped.

Mayor Richard David on Monday said he will propose legislation to eliminate the bulk item charge at City Council's next work session.

In recent years, Binghamton residents have been required to buy stickers to get rid of large items that aren't accepted for regular garbage pickup.

David said the program generated about $60,000 in annual revenue. But, he said, many people were not complying with the sticker rule. He said nearly 800 violations were issued last year for bulk items that did not have a sticker.

The mayor said many residents chose to stockpile trash on porches, in backyards and in garages because of the bulk item fee.
