A report of a possible shooting in the neighborhood prompted a lockdown at Binghamton High School.

Police were called to the area of 101 Murray Street around 11:20 a.m. Thursday after a report that three gunshots had been heard.

The high school, which is located a block away from the possible shooting scene, was locked down as a precaution.

The lockdown was in effect for about an hour starting at 11:30. No one was permitted to leave the building but classes continued as normal.

A school district statement said the "lock out" was continued until the situation was considered safe by police.

As students emerged from the school, some complained they were hungry because they had missed lunch during the lockdown.

After the report of shots fired, Murray Street was closed between Main Street and Seminary Avenue.

There were no signs in the area that anyone had been injured. Uniformed officers and detectives looked for evidence and interviewed people in the neighborhood.

A man who may have fired the shots was said to have left the area in a car.

Police were concerned that the case was related to a reported menacing incident that happened Wednesday afternoon in the area of the high school.

Binghamton police supervisors were not available to discuss the investigation.
