The owners of a Binghamton restaurant say city officials are impeding their expansion efforts.

The operators of the Old Union Hotel in the First Ward have been working to add seating to the business.

Adam Kipp, one of the owners, said the property at 246 Clinton Street was acquired nearly four years ago.

Kipp said he and other family members made extensive renovations to the building to get it in shape for the new business.

A run-down building next door was torn down in preparation for an outdoor patio and deck. But Kipp said actions by the city have made the expansion project difficult and more expensive than necessary.

After growing increasingly frustrated with the bureaucratic hurdles, Kipp publicized the situation on Facebook.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Tuesday morning, Kipp expressed concern that the project has been held up despite efforts to expand the successful business.

Kipp said he's heard complaints from other small business operators and property owners of mistreatment by some city officials.

Mayor Richard David could not be reached Tuesday afternoon to comment on Kipp's assertions.
