Ignorance of the law isn't usually considered a good excuse but most people in Broome County may not know about local Halloween curfew laws.

Authorities say the towns of Chenango and Conklin have curfews on the books that apply to Halloween, as well as the day before and the day after. The curfews run from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

In those towns, those under the age of 18 aren't supposed to be out on the streets, parks or other public areas unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 21.

There are exceptions for authorized school events, work and other activities that have been authorized by a parent or guardian.

The Chenango and Conklin curfew laws were enacted several years ago following some Halloween problems linked primarily to older teenagers.

Broome County Sheriff's Office Captain Kathleen Newcomb said there hasn't been much trouble around Halloween time in recent years. She said historically, there tend to be more problems when Halloween falls on a Friday or Saturday.

Newcomb said extra sheriff's patrols for Halloween will be assigned to several communities including: Chenango Bridge; Kirkwood and Conklin; Hillcrest and Port Crane; Endwell; Whitney Point; and Windsor.

UPDATE: The Chenango and Conklin curfew hours have been added to the story.
