Warmer weather and a trip to California got the Binghamton Bearcats softball team off to a great start last week.  Participating in the CSUN Early Bird Classic in Northridge, California the Bearcats went 3-1 with one game rained out.  Facing their first game action of the season the Bearcats played well and closed out the tournament with an 8-3 win over Santa Clara.  BU ended up with a .301 team batting average.  Makayla Alvarez ripped a three-run home run to spark the Binghamton victory.

Pitchers Chelsea Howard and Rayn Gibson got their seasons off to solid starts.  Gibson is 1-0 with one save and and ERA of 2.62.  Howard is 1-0 with an ERA of 2.63.

With success at the CSUN Early Bird Classic three Bearcats received honors from America East. Shortstop  Makayla Alvarez earned Player of the Week honors after hitting .455 with a pair of home runs and six runs batted in.  Rayn Gibson was named the top pitcher in America East and second baseman Marissa Braito earned conference Rookie of the Week honors.

The Bearcats don't play again until March 1-3 when they head to Clearwater, Florida to take part in the South Florida Tournament.
