On this day in rock history, Pink Floyd began their space-rock odyssey with the Syd Barrett-led Piper at the Gates of Dawn, before the group's original leader disappeared into mental illness. By the next year, David Gilmour had joined.

The Kinks, meanwhile, released the single that would break the band everywhere: "You Really Got Me," with its legendarily fuzzed-out riff, shot to the top of the U.K. charts and went Top 10 in the U.S., as well. By the time this song had run its course, the Kinks were household names.

Aug. 4 also marks the anniversary of a scary car accident that began a run of awful luck for Robert Plant. He'd end up recording Led Zeppelin's Presence in a wheelchair. Late Doors frontman Jim Morrison's long series of run ins with the law came to a close, when he was arrested a final time in Los Angeles.
