On this day in rock history, Jefferson Airplane took flight, serving as the first band to play at the Matrix, a former San Francisco pizza parlor that frontman Marty Balin had converted into a music club.

A sequel to Woodstock was held, offering a chance for many of its original concert stars to return – but also for a special appearance by a certain rock legend who wasn't there in 1969. One other thing that was the same: The weather. Thus, Woodstock '94 became unofficially referred to as "Mudstock." A few years later, the movie Detroit Rock City ended the long-awaited reunion of Kiss' original members, apparently forever.

Lynyrd Skynyrd issued their celebrated first album on today's date, and it came with a handy pronunciation guide for a band name that seemed to trip up a few new fans back then. Iron Butterfly went through a Metamorphosis, while Iron Maiden issued their fourth chart-topping U.K. smash, The Final Frontier – following 1992's Fear of the Dark.
