Apalachin Fire Station Project Nearing Completion

Construction of a new station for the Apalachin Fire Department could be completed by the end of the year.

The $3 million facility is being built on Pennsylvania Avenue on the site of an old station that was demolished last spring.

Fire department vehicles that have been stationed at other sites for the past several months should be able to utilize the bays at the new facility before the start of winter.

Brian Rieber, chairman of the Apalachin Board of Fire Commissioners, described work on the project as "slow and steady."

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Rieber said a complex roofing system for the station was being installed this week.

Contractors also have been busy doing interior electrical, plumbing and heating work in recent days.

Although the current construction timeline calls for the station to be ready for use by Christmas, Rieber said he doesn't want work to be rushed at the end of the project. He said he wants everything to be done completely and correctly so there will be no need to fix things after the construction is done.
