Work on the Airport Road project in the towns of Dickinson and Union began last week. Drivers have been contending with lane restrictions and detours which have caused occasional congestion.

County officials say the four-lane roadway is being reconstructed from Stella Ireland Road to Lewis Road.

At times, traffic backups have been occurring in the area of Airport Road near the Route 17 interchange.

Officials had said that one lane would be open on Airport Road in either direction while the work is underway. But traffic occasionally is being detoured onto Lower Stella Ireland Road.

The existing concrete roadway is to be removed and replaced with asphalt. Guiderail and drainage work also is planned.

Funding for the project is being provided by the state. The work is expected to take several months to complete.
