Binghamton firefighters were called to an 11-story apartment complex on the West Side after a reported electrical problem linked to the air conditioning system.

The trouble at 5 Riverside Towers occurred around 12:55 p.m. Monday. Police and fire units rushed to the 116-unit building after an initial report that some smoke was visible on the roof.

One resident said electricity to his apartment on the third floor was briefly interrupted. He said emergency lights were activated.

Fire department duty chief Stephen Faughnan said an electrical controller to the air conditioning system malfunctioned. He said firefighters saw no smoke but they detected a slight odor.

Faughnan said the problem tripped a breaker, knocking out power for a short time. He said the controller unit where the problem was discovered must be replaced.

It was not immediately known if the issue interrupted air conditioning to any portion of the building, which is located on Riverside Drive just west of Front Street.

A security officer said no one was available to speak with a reporter about the incident.
