What a funny word. "Skype!"  It is actually a pretty handy way of communicating long distance.

In the old days, we'd pick up our landline phone, dial a number and chat away. This new, fancy way of talking gives you the same feel.

My husband and I talk to our grandkids via Skype. We can see them and they can see us. For anyone who wants to communicate more with family and friends far away, this is a must have. So what is Skype?

Basically, it is a computer program that allows you to "dial" a friend or family member through your computer and, with web cams, you have a video conversation. The basic service is free, which is handy. It is a snap to install.

The funny thing about Skype is it has been around since 2003, but is just now taking off.

Here are some basic facts about Skype.

1. All it takes is a computer, webcam, and the program

2. It is free to talk to other Skype users. it costs money to talk to others not on Skype.

3. To make a call, you just need to know the other Skype users Skype name.

4. All you have to remember is to look at the webcam when you talk.
