The more you expand your circle of friends and try things, sometimes you run in to new foods are are pretty darn tasty.  Have you ever seen something on a menu that you are not sure how to pronounce and avoid ordering it to save embarrassment?  Be honest.  It happens to just about everyone.

There are a few of the new-to-me foods that I have to make a conscientious effort to pronounce correctly.  That's when you hope your brain takes over to avoid putting your foot in your mouth.  Here's what I mean:

  • Acai-  pronounced ah-sah-EE --  Acai is an Amazonian berry that has more antioxidants than the blueberry. If you're a yogurt eater or crave natural juices, you might find Acai in the ingredients.  Try it, you'll like it!
  • Quinoa - pronounced keen-wah - An ancient grain, much like rice but much more crunchy and nutritious. I'm getting to be a big fan thanks to Traci Taylor who loves it.  A big thank you to Traci for telling me how to say it too.  Try stuffing it with turkey for stuffed peppers.
  • Edamame- pronounced ed-a-ma-may - A cross between a bean and a pea but full of fiber, protein and B vitamins, you'll find Edamame in lots of Asian restaurants and I'm seeing it on more and more on salad bars in the Binghamton area.
  • Cacao- pronounced ka-cow - If you're a chocolate lover you may already be familiar with this one.  According to Men's Health, it's known to lower stress levels and make you more focused.
  • Rooibos- pronounced roy-biss - Also known as red tea for tea drinkers. From the red-bush plant in South Africa,  rooibos has a distinct smooth flavor, it's caffeine-free and full of vitamins.  It's been known to sooth a soar throat and help you lose weight.  My friend lost 10 pounds drinking lots of this tea over a two month period.
